The Custodian’s Role

The self directed IRA is the most popular way to save for retirement. Individuals can set one up outside of work. The largest benefit is that this IRA gives the investors control over their portfolio.

Investors can choose to do a diverse portfolio or a strict one. They decide what is too risky or conservative for them. Investors must have a custodian with a self directed IRA.

Custodians manage the IRA. Examples of a custodian are a broker, bank, or trust company. Every custodian has different restrictions on investing because not all of custodians offer real estate as an investing option.

Custodians get paid by charging fees for managing the account. These fees vary for each company. Research is absolutely necessary to be sure that investors choose the best quality for the fairest price in the custodian.

One type of fee is a flat fee that is charged for specific services. Asset-based fees are another type. This fee is charged for things like opening the account, transferring money, and liquidating assets.

A true self directed IRA cannot be found in major banks or brokerage companies. Those custodians offer traditional investing in things like stocks, bonds, and mutual funds. Investors are limited only to the custodian’s selection of investing.

True custodians do not offer investment options for a self directed IRA. Banks or trust companies manage the IRA and do what the investor legally asks of them. Some custodians offer advice, but they follow what the investor wants.

There is a custodian that gives all of the control to the investor and the IRA is called a self controlled IRA. The investor literally has all of the control and does not need the custodian’s permission on certain regulations. Individuals who have had experience in IRAs can do this, but others should wait for more experience.
