The United Arab Emirates (UAE) is a highly developed and rapidly diversifying economy, based on a variety of socioeconomic indicators such as HDI, GDP per capita, and energy consumption per capita. In 2008, its GDP at $270 billion ranked second in the CCASG, third in the MENA region, and 38th in the world. Even if it is no longer as dependent on natural resources as it used to be, natural gas and petroleum still play a major role in its economy. It also has about $350 billion worth of active construction projects.
