This is my first experience with Quicken, and I have the Home and Business 2011 version. I am downgrading my review, as I continue to get errors, and I just noticed all of the 5 star reviews are from Quicken beta testers! The reports seem a complicated, the menu seems to just be rearranged, seems to be very difficult to find what you’re looking for without going to help. I really hope quicken works on some new features soon, till then I’ll keep upgrading every three years. It will save it under that day’s date or just as a file. I did not like however, the way Quicken 8 made you update to next version. You play the hunt and search game and it can be very frustrating at times. After using Money Plus for years, that is to be expected.

I had and old version of quicken that my new computer would not use. I went to an office supply store and they wanted over $100.

And a working sync system between the iPhone app and the desktop app. I’ve only used it for more than a month but I haven’t found anything to complain about.

I got that total down to $150, and still got all my beer and smokes, yeah. Last week we spent $174 on groceries, this week, $68 (we checked what we had in the cupboards/fridge this time before going), saved $100.

I guess this means that after I do the updates I have to go to each of my bank sites and double check. I switch to Quicken Home and Business to replace Microsoft Money Small Business as it will no longer be supported. My confidence in that regard is thin. The interface is daunting, to put it mildly.

I was fairly content with Home and Business 2008. The only reason I downloaded 2011 is because I want to access certain accounts that 2008 cannot, such as my 401K with ADP, my kids 529’s with New York State, and a savings/loan account with Sallie Mae. Unfortunately, if you want to download transactions from bank account, credit cards, etc, you have no option but to upgrade every three years. I’ve been using Quicken for more than 10 years, and my 2007 version suddenly stopped working properly a couple weeks ago. Most financial institutions will let you download the past ~90 days of information into Quicken. If you want any information earlier than that Quicken has NO easy way to enter this information in bulk, and suggests that you get to manually entering info one transaction record at a time.

Its reporting features are weak. You can look at totals in a budget category, and clicking on them will show you graphs, but in this area you cannot get to any detail to analyze the date within a category. I followed the setup guide and searched through the user forums to help me figure out one or two things that I didn’t understand at first. Go to the FAQ section of their user forums to find the “cheat sheet” to get started on the right foot.

It’s like increasing the distance between you and the car ahead when driving on ice! I still use Quicken but their budgeting feature leaves a lot to be desired.

It became abundantly clear that the whole process was broken, so I went back for a refund. At least I don’t have to spend time chasing down little problems. It isn’t perfect, and I haven’t quite figured out how use some of its functionality - in particular tracking our investments, but overall I’m quite happy. My bank said they cannot download my transaction to this accounting software because they do not use the newest file transfer systems. It works great and I’m constantly using it every time I making a transaction. It is really helping me keep track of my money whether it goes in or out.

Users are eager to help explain the four rules or provide general financial advice in terms of budgeting. Jesse, the creator of YNAB, frequently visits the forums to answer questions, and it impresses me how much user input from the forums he takes and puts directly into the software. I could never get all the numbers from all the accounts to match up. I could never grasp where my money was or where it was going.
